First Question

Situation:
There is an empty House. One person goes in and a bit later two persons come out.

Explanations:
By Biologist: Procreation – amitosis, fission, (asexual) reproduction etc
By Mathematician: if one more person entered the building it would be empty again.

Your assignment:
How would a tester explain the situation?

  1. It is a feature while not against the specifications.

Explanation: If in the specification it has been mentioned, that in case 1 person going in and 2 going out isn't a bug situation, prohibited or elseway wrong, then it would've been bug.

  2. To me, an excellent tester would be reluctant to answer the question right away, and would be very cautious about explaining the situation, while seeking more information. That is, a tester would question and investigate before coming to conclusions.

An excellent tester would start by questioning the mission--what's our assignment? In service of accomplishing the assignment, she might ask for details about the context; about who wants to know and how they want to know it; about what further information is available; about who else has observed the situation; about what equipment and tools might be available; about the work products. This doesn't have to be a long process. In fact, it can be very rapid. The idea, though, is prevent going off the testing mission.

  3. I agree with Michael, of course. But having said that, I'm happy to give a quick answer:

As a tester, I would want to see this for myself. I would want to verify that the house is empty and see the people coming out. That would answer a lot of questions. Perhaps the person going in was pregnant, and perhaps she came out with a newborn baby.

  4. Thank You for those great answers, Michal,James an Nämm.

I hope You have time to answer the next ones also so i can add those to our discussions meetings.
I'd be fun to see what we come up with compared to You.

    Skeeve.

  5. There are so many possible questions worth asking e.g. what is a bit in terms of time? how else might people enter the house e.g. by a window, cellar door, hole in the wall, etc?

Then I'd like to know how important or relevant the topic is - is it life changing, or idle speculation - that'd help me decide how much time and energy I'd want to spend understanding what might have happened...

That'll do for now as I'm viewing the question as idle speculation ;-)

  6. Michael - Tester only has enough time to investigate in perfect world. In real world he would be pressed to give an answer as good as possible and as quickly as possible.
